Cape Disappointment sits at the mouth of the mighty Columbia River, where it spills into the vast Pacific Ocean. This area has been historically significant for centuries. It’s the site where Meriwether Lewis and William Clark concluded their epic journey to the Pacific in 1805. They were actually hoping to find a clear passage to the Pacific, but were instead met with, well, a cape that seemed to block their way. Hence the name, ‘Cape Disappointment.’
You’ll see remnants of old military fortifications that once guarded the river entrance. Keep an eye out for gray whales if you’re lucky – they’re often spotted migrating past here! There are also some wonderful interpretive displays that tell the story of the indigenous Chinook people, early explorers, and the military history of the area. We’ll spend about 1.5 hours here. Restrooms are available.
This magnificent structure, built in 1898, stands proudly on a bluff overlooking the Pacific. Unlike the older Cape Disappointment Lighthouse, which guides ships into the Columbia River, the North Head Lighthouse was built to warn ships approaching the treacherous coast from the north. It’s a truly iconic symbol of maritime history in the
Pacific Northwest.
You’ll be able to walk right up to the base of the lighthouse and admire its stunning architecture. The views from this vantage point are absolutely spectacular, offering panoramic vistas of the Pacific Ocean and the rugged coastline. It’s a fantastic photo opportunity. There’s also a short, easy walk to the lighthouse itself, offering different perspectives. Restrooms are available near the parking area.
Astoria boasts a fantastic culinary scene, especially when it comes to seafood. You’ll have about an hour to grab some delicious grub. We’re right here on the riverfront, which means fantastic views and a variety of dining options to suit every taste and budget. You can find everything from casual fish and chips, a local favorite to sit-
down restaurants with fresh seafood and local brews.
Take a stroll along the historic Riverwalk if you have time after you eat. You might even spot some sea lions basking on the docks! This stop is exactly of one hour.
This incredible 125-foot tall monument, completed in 1926, sits atop Coxcomb Hill and offers the most breathtaking panoramic views of Astoria, the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean. But it’s more than just a viewpoint; it’s a giant work of art and a historical narrative etched into the very structure.
The Column features a sgraffito frieze, which is a unique artistic technique where scenes are carved into wet plaster, depicting 14 significant events in Oregon’s early history. You’ll see depictions of the arrival of Captain Robert Gray, Lewis and Clark’s expedition, the founding of Fort Astoria, and the arrival of the railroad.
For those feeling energetic, you can climb the 164-step spiral staircase to the top for even more incredible views. There’s also a gift shop where you can pick up a gliders – those little wooden airplanes – to launch from the top, which is a fun Astoria tradition. We’ll have about an hour here to explore, take photos, and enjoy the unparalleled vistas.
This is a truly special place, the reconstructed winter encampment of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. After their monumental journey across the continent, they built Fort Clatsop for shelter during the harsh winter before beginning their return trip. It was here that they meticulously documented their findings, prepared for the journey home, and interacted with the local Clatsop and Chinook people.
At the memorial, you’ll find a full-scale replica of the fort, built using the same tools and methods that Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery would have used. You can walk through the barracks, see the fire pits, and really get a sense of what life was like for them during that challenging winter. The rangers here are incredibly knowledgeable and often do demonstrations of period skills. There’s also an excellent visitor center with exhibits and a short film that provides more context to their incredible journey.
Gearhart Beach is known for its wide, expansive sandy shores, gentle waves, and a generally less crowded atmosphere than some of its more famous neighbors like Seaside. It’s the perfect spot to stretch your legs, breathe in that refreshing salty air, and simply enjoy the Pacific Ocean.
You’ll have a full hour to enjoy the beach. This is your time to unwind and reflect on our amazing day.
There are restrooms available near the beach access. Remember to stay aware of the tides and any posted warnings. This is the perfect way to cap off our adventure before we begin our journey back to Vancouver. Enjoy the beach!
